The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard," is a military unit based in the United States. With 8 employees, the regiment holds the distinction of being the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, with a history dating back to 1784. The Old Guard serves as the Army's official ceremonial unit and presidential escort, performing duties such as conducting military ceremonies at significant locations like the White House, the Pentagon, and national memorials. They also maintain a 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns and provide military funeral escorts at Arlington National Cemetery. A unique tradition of The Old Guard is the distinctive "buff strap" worn on the left shoulder, a replica of a 19th-century knapsack strap signifying an Old Guard soldier's commitment to personal appearance and precision. The regiment is also the only Army unit authorized to pass in-review with fixed bayonets at parades, a practice dating back to their victory at the Battle of Cerro Gordo during the Mexican War.
