About Margaret Offermann
Margaret K. Offermann, MD, PhD is a principal with the Salutramed Group, a medical and life science consulting firm. She is a board certified medical oncologist and tumor biologist with over 20 years of experience and is well known for her ability to integrate the science of tumor biology with clinical trial design, the practice of oncology and health and science policy issues. She is a member of the Board of Directors and is Vice President-Elect for Science Policy at the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology (FASEB), a federation of 23 non-profit research societies with over 100,000 members that advances biological science and advocates for research policies that promote scientific progress and education. She serves on the Board of Directors and is Treasurer of the Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education, a non-profit organization that promotes cooperation between cancer clinicians, educators and researchers throughout the state of Georgia. She is on the board of directors of ChemoCore Therapeutics, a privately held biotechnology company developing treatments for cancer. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of Georgia Bio, a non-profit, membership-based organization that promotes the interests and growth of the life sciences industry in Georgia. She received an undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College, magna cum laude. She received both MD and PhD degrees from the Medical College of Virginia. She did internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals followed by training in Medical Oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston. She served on the faculty at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School prior to joining the faculty at Emory University. Dr. Offermann rose to the rank of Professor of Hematology and Oncology at Emory, where she served as co-director of the MD, PhD training program, Associate Director of the Postgraduate Training Program in Hematology and Oncology and Associate Director of the Winship Cancer Institute. Dr. Offermann has published extensively on innate immunity, endothelial biology, tumor biology and virology. Her research program explored innate antiviral immunity in endothelial cells and the molecular events in the pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma, with funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and other organizations. From 2007-2010, she served as Deputy National Vice President for Research at the American Cancer Society, providing executive leadership for both intramural and extramural research programs in a department with a budget of approximately $130 million annually.
