Landis Zimmerman joined HHMI as Vice President and Chief Investment Officer in 2004. He is responsible for investing the Institute's endowment. Zimmerman came to HHMI from the University of Pennsylvania, where in 1998 he had been named as the university's first chief investment officer. At Penn, Zimmerman managed a $3.6 billion endowment and a $600 million pension fund. Zimmerman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in economics, and received his M.B.A. from Penn's Wharton School. He started his career in 1985 with J.P. Morgan and became a vice president in its emerging markets structured products area. In 1994, Zimmerman joined Bear, Stearns & Co., where he was an associate director in the derivatives department. In 1996, he moved to the Rockefeller Foundation where he worked on asset allocation and managed the private equity and fixed income portfolios. Zimmerman is a member of the investment committee of The William Penn Foundation in Philadelphia and serves on the governing board of trustees of the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C.
