About Greg Howat
As a vice president, Greg participates in the planning and implementation of strategies to ensure that EMMC meets its patient care mission. He is specifically responsible for providing direction to human resources, education and training, employee health and employee wellness. Greg is also charged with leading and improving: employee and labor relations, recruitment and retention, policy administration, performance management, employee recognition events, salary administration, co-leading cultural transformation, resolving employee complaints and ensuring compliance with a myriad of legal and regulatory requirements related to employment matters. The road to here Greg served three years in the US Army; where his primary duty was acting as a North Vietnamese interpreter in Saigon. After leaving the Army, Greg worked for a retail company, large construction firm and manufacturing facilities before finding his way into healthcare 17 years ago. He started out as a supervisor of human resources 24 years ago after finishing his undergraduate degree in 1977. Greg continued to work full-time while he earned a Master of Business Administration degree in 1983 and a law degree with honors in 1985 at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Greg held director level HR positions in medical centers in the Detroit area and was administrator for Human Resources at the Medical College of Ohio (MCO) in Toledo immediately prior to joining EMMC. MCO is a publicly supported school offering the MD degree as well as MSN, MPH and other graduate degrees. It also has a medium sized hospital; total employment is 3400. Guiding Principle "If you're not serving the customer, you'd better be serving someone who is." Although Human Resources, Education/Training, and Employee Health don't provide direct care to patients, these functions are crucial to EMMC's patient care mission. We support leaders and staff by ensuring that we have employees with the right skills in the right positions that they are well trained and remain healthy. We know how to recruit and keep good people and that's an advantage for everyone at EMMC. Proudest professional accomplishments During my career in Human Resources, the most satisfying role is to mentor HR staff and leaders throughout the organization in the resolution of complex people issues. What he's trying to do Together with staff and leaders in the various functions, I am working hard to meet the needs of our customers while streamlining processes and making full use of the technology in which EMMC has invested. If we are known for providing valuable tools and information to help leaders recruit, train, retain and reward people, the customers will be quick to take advantage of both.
