A. Eugene Kohn currently serves as the Chairman of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. In 1976, along with William Pedersen and Sheldon Fox, he founded KPF based on a commitment to design excellence. Gene has served as Partner-in-Charge of many of KPF's major domestic and international projects and is responsible for many of the firm's new commissions. As founder and principal of KPF, he has developed a global strategy and has shaped the firm into one of the world's leaders in all aspects of architectural practice. Gene is respected worldwide, not only for his fifty-year career as an architect, but also for his inspirational leadership qualities. He is highly regarded as an engaging public speaker and is sought after around the globe as a moderator, juror and keynote speaker on contemporary architecture. He has lectured at numerous universities, for professional organizations and institutions across the US and around the world. Gene's achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards. Most recently, he received The Soane Foundation Honors and the 2010 Alumni Award of Merit by the University of Pennsylvania the highest university-wide award presented to alumni by Penn. He has also been recognized with the Wharton Real Estate Center's Lifetime Achievement Award, the University of Pennsylvania - PennDesign Dean's Medal of Achievement, the highest honor awarded by the institution, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He has been honored by the National Education Fund, the Sheltering Arms Children Service, and has been presented the Sidney L. Strauss Award from the New York Society of Architects (1996). In May of 2005 he was bestowed the Salvadori Award for Excellence in Design. He is an Executive Fellow of the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University the first architect to be awarded the title. Gene has gained degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and attended the Harvard Graduate School of Design's Real Estate Development Course in 1982. He served in the US Navy on Active Duty for three years between his BA and MA degrees, for five years on Reserve Duty, and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. He is registered in twenty-six states, as well as in Great Britain and Japan. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a member of its Octagon Society and he served as president of the AIA New York City Chapter. He is also a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an Emeritus Board Member of the Council on Tall Buildings and the Urban Habitat, a member of the Japan Institute of Architects, and an honorary member of the Fellows of the Philippine Institute. Gene has helped establish and teaches at the Harvard International Real Estate Center. He has also served as a Trustee for the University of Pennsylvania and currently is an Overseer for the School of Design and is a Member of the Wharton Real Estate Center Advisory Board. He is a Trustee of the National Building Museum and the Urban Land Institute.
