Valerie A. McCarthy is the chair of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). Ms. McCarthy has been involved with Planned Parenthood for almost 30 years, first as a volunteer, then as a staff person, and later as a board leader. She has served as an affiliate board chair, chair of the Eastern Region, as well as chair of the Eastern Region Nominating Commitee, and member of the PPFA board. During the 1980s, Ms. McCarthy was a staff person at Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC), holding many positions, including pregnancy counselor, sexuality educator, HIV counselor, and coordinator of volunteer services. She holds a certificate in fundraising management and is a certified human sexuality trainer. Later, while serving as board chair of PPNC (1998?2003), Ms. McCarthy spearheaded efforts to strengthen and diversify PPNC and its board. She also coordinated efforts to bring more than 2,000 Nassau County advocates to Washington, DC, for the 2004 March for Women's Lives. That same year, Ms. McCarthy and her husband, Pat, were awarded the PPNC Margaret Sanger Award for their commitment to the affiliate. Under her leadership, Ms. McCarthy was instrumental in creating the Planned Parenthood of Nassau County Action Fund, the advocacy and political arm of PPNC. She has served on the boards of both the PPNC Action Fund and the national Planned Parenthood Action Fund. She also served two years on the PPFA National Nominating Committee. In addition to serving her affiliate and the national Planned Parenthood organization, at both the national and regional levels, she has also served for many years on the board of the statewide Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York. As a committed volunteer, Ms. McCarthy also serves on the board of the Child Care Council of Nassau County, where she is a past board president.
