Anne V. Maher practices in the area of advertising and consumer protection regulation. Her particular experience involves food, drug, cosmetic and dietary supplement advertising issues and investigations. Her experience includes: FTC and state Attorneys General investigations of unfair and deceptive advertising and marketing practices Advertising challenges before the BBB's self-regulatory groups: the National Advertising Division, the Children's Advertising Review Unit, and the Electronic Retailing Self-Regultion Program review and evaluation of advertising substantiation express and implied claims conveyed by promotional messages development and assessment of consumer perception surveys internet marketing issues the overlapping jurisdiction between the Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration Prior to joining KKB, Ms. Maher was in private practice. From 1992 until 2001, she was the Assistant Director of the Advertising Practices Division in the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. In that role, she supervised law enforcement investigations and industry outreach efforts in such areas as food, dietary supplement, OTC drug, tobacco, alcohol, infomercial and online advertising. Prior to her appointment as Assistant Director, she served in the Office of the Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection, and as Attorney Advisor to an FTC Commissioner. Ms. Maher was the FTC's designated liaison with the FDA and the USDA, and worked closely with the staff of both agencies on a wide range of projects and regulatory actions. She directed the development of the FTC's 1994 Food Advertising Enforcement Policy Statement, and was integral in the creation of the FTC's 1998 Dietary Supplement Advertising Guide and the 1999 Report to Congress on Self-Regulation in the Alcohol Industry. She is a recipient of the Federal Trade Commission's Award for Distinguished Service. She frequently speaks at industry and association meetings involving advertising law and policy.
