Yale Center For British Art

The Yale Center for British Art is a public art museum and research institute located in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1977, the institution is home to a staff of 98 employees. The Yale Center for British Art houses the largest collection of British art outside of the United Kingdom, spanning from the Elizabethan period to the present day. This extensive collection reflects the development of British art and life throughout history. In addition to the physical collection, over 70,000 images are available online for public access. The museum also offers a Reference Library and Study Room for in-depth research and examination of the artwork. Designed by renowned architect Louis I. Kahn, the museum building features a distinctive four-story steel-and-glass exterior. The interior is characterized by two internal courtyards and a restrained palette of natural materials, including travertine, white oak, and Belgian linen. Kahn's design prioritizes natural light, maximizing daylight and using artificial illumination only when necessary.
