VocalEssence

VocalEssence is a non-profit organization based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 1969 by Philip Brunelle, the organization has grown to become a leading force in choral music, inspiring singers worldwide. With 14 employees, VocalEssence has a rich history spanning five decades, dedicated to exploring the power and beauty of the human voice. VocalEssence offers a wide range of choral music experiences, including performances by its professional ensemble, the VocalEssence Chorus, and the youth choir, VocalEssence Singers Of This Age (VESOTA). The organization also presents concerts featuring choirs from around the globe, hosts composer festivals, and commissions new works. VocalEssence is committed to making choral music accessible to all, offering free or discounted tickets to students and seniors. A key differentiator for VocalEssence is its dedication to showcasing contemporary music. The organization has premiered over 550 new works and commissioned more than 300 choral pieces, with over half written by composers of color. This commitment to adventurous programming has earned them multiple Chorus America awards, including the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music six times. VocalEssence has also been honored with the Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence, a prestigious recognition given only once per organization's lifetime.
