The U.S. Department of State is a government agency headquartered in Washington, D.C. It employs over 32,000 people. The U.S. Department of State manages America's relationships with foreign governments, international organizations, and the people of other countries. They carry out the President's foreign policy, helping to build a more free, prosperous, and secure world. Their diplomats and Civil Service professionals represent the people and advocate the interests of the U.S. abroad. The Foreign Service, comprised of diplomats, responds to the needs of American citizens in other countries. Members of the Foreign Service can be sent to any embassy, consulate, or diplomatic mission worldwide. Civil Service employees provide expertise and continuity in accomplishing the Department's mission, engaging in functions such as issuing passports, compiling reports, providing logistical support, consulting with Congress, and managing budgets.
