United States Court of Federal Claims

The United States Court of Federal Claims, also known as Fed. Cl. in legal citations, is a federal court located in Washington, D.C. It is a United States federal court with national jurisdiction, established as the successor to the United States Court of Claims founded in 1855. The United States Court of Federal Claims hears monetary claims against the U.S. government. It handles a wide range of cases, including claims for just compensation for property taken, federal tax refunds, military and civilian pay disputes, and damages arising from government contract breaches. The court also has jurisdiction over patent and copyright infringement claims against the United States, as well as certain suits by Indian tribes. Additionally, it handles bid protests and other procurement-related claims. The court's general jurisdiction is defined in 28 U.S.C. § 1491.
