Who is Texas Animal Health Commission

The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) is a state regulatory agency based in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1893, the TAHC is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States. With a staff of 108 employees, the agency is dedicated to protecting the health of livestock, poultry, and exotic livestock across the state. The TAHC's mission is to safeguard the health and marketability of all Texas livestock, poultry, and exotic animals. This includes cattle, swine, poultry, sheep & goats, equine, exotic fowl, and exotic livestock such as bovidae, cervidae, and camlids. The agency works to prevent, control, and eradicate contagious or infectious diseases in these animals, while also preventing the introduction of foreign and emerging diseases. The TAHC operates seven regional offices strategically located across Texas, allowing them to collaborate closely with veterinarians, ranchers, livestock markets, slaughter plants, and other stakeholders in the livestock industry. Due to the overlap between state and federal livestock and poultry health programs, the TAHC frequently works alongside personnel from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service-Veterinary Services (USDA-APHIS-VS).
