Tennessee Higher Education Initiative

Tennessee Higher Education Initiative is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Employing 13 individuals, the organization generates revenue exceeding $10,000. THEI funds and coordinates degree-bearing college programs offered directly within Tennessee prisons. These programs provide incarcerated individuals with the opportunity to earn Associate's degrees in Business Administration and Political Science. THEI collaborates with the Tennessee Department of Correction, along with colleges and universities across Tennessee, to make higher education accessible to incarcerated individuals. All credits, certificates, and degrees earned through THEI programs are recognized and transferable to Tennessee Board of Regents institutions, as well as accredited private and public colleges and universities outside of Tennessee. THEI encourages formerly incarcerated students to continue their academic journeys upon release, providing support for a seamless transition to campus-based learning.
