SUSTAINABLE IOWA LAND TRUST

The Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT) is a nonprofit organization based in West Branch, Iowa. They employ 10 individuals and generate an annual revenue of $2.5 million. SILT is dedicated to preserving Iowa land for small, diverse, nature-friendly farms that provide food for Iowans. SILT offers affordable land access to young and new farmers through land preservation programs. Their mission is to permanently protect Iowa land for growing nature-friendly table food, aiming for an Iowa sustained by wholesome food grown on community-based farms. SILT addresses the issue of Iowa's reliance on imported food, which stands at nearly 90 percent, while exporting most of what is grown, leading to environmental concerns like hog manure, threatened water supplies, and poor air quality.
