Sustainable Forestry Initiative

Sustainable Forestry Initiative, based in Washington, District of Columbia, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management practices. The organization employs 73 individuals and generates annual revenue of $8.8 million. SFI provides assurance within supply chains, actively contributes to conservation efforts, and fosters education and community engagement around forest stewardship. SFI partners with a diverse range of stakeholders including the forest sector, brand owners, conservation groups, resource professionals, landowners, educators, local communities, Indigenous peoples, governments, and universities. Through its standards and on-product labels, SFI empowers consumers to make informed decisions that support responsible forest product consumption. Beyond its certification program, SFI manages the SFI Forest Partners® Program, which seeks to expand the supply of certified forest products. The organization also administers the SFI Conservation and Community Partnerships Grant Program, funding research and community development initiatives. SFI additionally runs Project Learning Tree®, an educational program that teaches teachers and youth about forests and environmental conservation. Sustainable Forestry Initiative is governed by a three-chamber board of directors, ensuring representation from environmental, social, and economic sectors.
