Superior Court of Pennsylvania

The Superior Court of Pennsylvania, located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a judicial institution established in 1895. As one of two statewide intermediate appellate courts, it plays a crucial role in the Pennsylvania legal system. The Superior Court primarily handles appeals in criminal and civil cases originating from the Courts of Common Pleas. Cases are typically heard by panels of three judges, rotating among Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh. In certain instances, cases may be heard en banc, involving all nine judges. Superior Court judges are elected statewide, serving 10-year terms. After completing their initial term, judges are subject to retention votes, allowing voters to decide whether they continue serving.
