State of NJRegional Medical Examiners Office

The New Jersey Office of the State Medical Examiner (OSME) is a state agency within the Division of Criminal Justice of the Office of the Attorney General/Department of Law & Public Safety. The office is headquartered in New Jersey and employs 16 individuals. The NJ Office of the State Medical Examiner is responsible for administering and enforcing state laws and regulations concerning the medical examiner system and medicolegal death investigations. This includes overseeing the Northern and Southern Regional Medical Examiner Offices, which provide services to six of New Jersey's 21 counties. The State Medical Examiner also provides general supervision to the remaining county medical examiners and their offices. The OSME conducts medicolegal death investigations in all cases of human death that fall under circumstances of public interest, such as violent deaths, deaths under suspicious or unusual circumstances, deaths of inmates, and deaths of infants and children under three years old. The office plays a vital role in public health, public safety, and the administration of justice by investigating deaths and providing critical information to law enforcement and public health officials.
