Small World Initiative

Small World Initiative is a non-profit organization based in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. The organization was founded in 2012 at Yale University with a mission to inspire students in STEM fields, increase scientific literacy, and contribute to the fight against antibiotic resistance. Employing nine individuals, Small World Initiative generates approximately $2.5 million in annual revenue. The Small World Initiative operates an innovative educational program focused on discovery-based learning in the field of antibiotic research. Students engage in hands-on field and laboratory research, examining soil samples for potential antibiotic-producing bacteria and fungi. This approach aims to crowdsource antibiotic discovery by leveraging the efforts of a large network of student researchers. To date, the program has trained educators at hundreds of schools across 45 US states, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., and 15 countries. The Small World Initiative's unique program distinguishes itself through its hands-on, discovery-based learning model and its global reach. By empowering student researchers and training educators worldwide, SWI seeks to address the pressing issue of antibiotic resistance while fostering a passion for science and discovery in the next generation.
