Silicon Valley Independent Living Center

Silicon Valley Independent Living Center (SVILC), located in San Jose, California, is a private non-profit organization. It was founded in 1976 and has a staff of 21 employees. SVILC is dedicated to creating fully inclusive communities that value the dignity, equality, freedom, and worth of all individuals. SVILC provides services to Santa Clara County residents with disabilities. Their mission is to build disability identity, culture, and pride, create opportunities for personal and community transformation, and partner with others to ensure that civil and human rights are protected. SVILC is a consumer-controlled, non-residential Independent Living Center (ILC), which means it is run by and for people with disabilities. Over 70% of SVILC's highly-skilled staff and board members are individuals with disabilities who have firsthand experience with the challenges and triumphs of living with a disability. This unique perspective informs their programs and services, ensuring they are truly representative of the needs of their community.
