ShangriLa Therapeutic Academy of Riding

Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding (STAR) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation based in Lenoir City, Tennessee. Founded in 1987, the organization is dedicated to fostering personal achievement through therapeutic experiences involving horse-related activities for individuals with disabilities or special challenges. STAR is the oldest therapeutic riding program in Tennessee and holds premier accreditation from the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.). STAR serves individuals from 11 counties in East Tennessee, averaging 150 participants per week, ranging in age from 4 to 60+. Their team consists of PATH Intl. certified instructors and relies on the support of over 500 volunteers annually. The academy utilizes a herd of 35 to 40 horses and ponies to deliver its programs. STAR offers four main programs: Therapeutic Riding, Changing STRIDES, Heroes and Horses, and Minis in Motion. These programs cater to a wide range of disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, developmental delays, head trauma, hearing impairments, learning disabilities, cognitive disorders, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, orthopedic conditions, paralysis, speech impairments, Spina Bifida, stroke, and visual impairments.
