San Mateo County Harbor District is a public agency based in El Granada, California. The District employs 13 people and generates an annual revenue of $5 million. The San Mateo County Harbor District manages two primary harbors: Pillar Point Harbor and Oyster Point Marina/Park. Pillar Point Harbor, a major commercial and sport fishing harbor, offers 369 berths and hosts various public events, including the Mavericks surfing competition and a Christmas boat decorating contest. Oyster Point Marina/Park, located on the San Francisco Bay, features 455 berths and provides ferryboat service to the East Bay, dining cruises, marine educational programs, and supports area redevelopment initiatives. The District's history dates back to 1931, when an act was passed to establish harbor districts in California. Originally intended for a harbor in Redwood City, the focus shifted to Pillar Point Harbor due to the Great Depression. After World War II, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed a breakwater at Pillar Point, which was later expanded with the addition of the Johnson Pier, docks, and berths. The District further expanded its operations by taking over Oyster Point Marina/Park from the City of South San Francisco in 1977.
