San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency SFMTA

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, responsible for managing all ground transportation within the city. With over 5,700 employees, the SFMTA is one of San Francisco’s largest employers, with representation from 18 labor organizations. The SFMTA oversees a wide range of transportation services, including the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), the nation's seventh largest public transit system. The Agency is also responsible for managing parking and traffic, bicycling, walking, and the regulation of taxis. Established in 1999, the SFMTA is unique in the United States for its comprehensive approach to urban transportation, overseeing all aspects of movement within the city. The Agency is governed by a Board of Directors, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Board of Supervisors, who provide policy oversight and ensure that the public interest is represented.
