Organization of American Historians

The Organization of American Historians (OAH) is a non-profit association based in Bloomington, Indiana. Founded in 1907, the OAH has grown to become the world’s largest professional association dedicated to American history scholarship. With over 7,800 members from the United States and international locations, the OAH strives to advance excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and presentation of American history. The OAH offers a variety of products and services for its members and the wider academic community. This includes the publication of two key journals: the scholarly Journal of American History, a leading publication in the field for over nine decades, and The American Historian magazine. Additionally, the organization hosts an annual meeting, the largest gathering of American historians in the nation, and periodically holds regional meetings to foster discussion and collaboration. The OAH’s commitment to broad inclusivity in the study of American history is reflected in its evolution. Originally known as the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, the organization rebranded as the OAH in 1965 to reflect a wider scope encompassing national studies.
