Newark Department of Public Safety

The Newark Department of Public Safety is a government agency based in Newark, New Jersey. It was established by Mayor Ras J. Baraka to consolidate the city's police, fire, emergency management, and homeland security services. The department provides a variety of public safety services to the citizens of Newark. The Police Division focuses on securing neighborhoods, business districts, and municipal assets, responding to over 520,000 calls for service annually. The Fire Division protects lives and property by fighting fires, responding to medical emergencies, and handling dangerous conditions, answering over 16,720 calls annually. The Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security coordinates training, preparedness, and response to natural and man-made disasters. The Communications Division manages 911 calls, emergency responses, and internal communication between the different divisions. The Newark Department of Public Safety operates with an annual budget exceeding $200 million and employs over 1,900 people, including more than 990 sworn police officers and over 630 sworn firefighters.
