New River Light Power

New River Light and Power (NRLP) is a nonprofit electric utility based in Boone, North Carolina. Operated by Appalachian State University's Division of Finance and Operations, NRLP has a history spanning over a century, serving the Western North Carolina region. With a team of four employees, the utility provides reliable electricity to a customer base of nearly 8,500 residential and commercial accounts in and around Boone. NRLP offers a range of electricity services to its customers. In 2022, the utility began purchasing its electricity from Carolina Power Partners, expanding its access to renewable energy sources. The utility actively collaborates with Appalachian State University's Office of Sustainability, Facilities Operations, and Renewable Energy Initiative on campus energy efficiency projects. These projects encompass the installation of solar panels and support for initiatives such as the Broyhill Wind Turbine. NRLP distinguishes itself through its commitment to reliable and safe electric service. The utility has earned the American Public Power Association’s highest Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designation, a testament to its dedication to providing high-quality power. Furthermore, NRLP demonstrates its commitment to the Appalachian community by allocating approximately $650,000 annually from its budget to support the university's general scholarship fund.
