New Bedford Whaling Museum

The New Bedford Whaling Museum is a non-profit organization located in New Bedford, Massachusetts. With a staff of 50 employees, the museum boasts a collection of over 750,000 items, making it a treasure trove of maritime history and culture. Visitors can explore the fascinating world of whaling through a variety of exhibits. Highlights include massive whale skeletons, the world's largest ship model, the Lagoda, and a digital replica of the "Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage 'Round the World," an epic painting longer than the Empire State Building. The museum delves into whale biology, ecology, and conservation, as well as the stories of the Yankee whalers who sailed the seven seas. The museum also offers a unique glimpse into the lives and experiences of New Bedford's whaling past through its vast collection of scrimshaw, whaling logbooks, and journals. A gift shop, The White Whale, sells books, gifts, and souvenirs related to the museum's exhibits. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and starting September 1, 2020, will also be open on Wednesdays.
