Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is a single-purpose special district located in Los Altos, California. Established by voter initiative in 1972, Midpen is responsible for preserving and managing a substantial greenbelt system in the San Francisco Bay Area. Midpen manages a network of 26 preserves encompassing nearly 65,000 acres across San Mateo, Santa Clara, and a small portion of Santa Cruz counties. The district offers over 225 miles of trails for public use, with 24 of its 26 preserves open free of charge year-round. The district's mission focuses on acquiring and preserving open space and agricultural land, protecting and restoring the natural environment, and providing opportunities for eco-sensitive public enjoyment and education. Midpen is dedicated to safeguarding over 70 rare native species and critical habitats, including waterways and redwood forests. Their preserves attract over 2 million visitors annually.
