Metropolitan St Louis Sewer District

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) is a public agency located in St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 1954, MSD serves as a special district, a designation unique to Missouri under its State Constitution. The agency employs over 521 individuals and manages an annual revenue of $383.2 million. MSD is responsible for essential water management services within its jurisdiction. These services include the interception, collection, and treatment of wastewater from approximately 425,000 residential, multi-family residential, and commercial/industrial accounts. The agency also oversees stormwater management across its service area, which encompasses all of St. Louis City and approximately 90 percent of St. Louis County, covering a total of 525 square miles and serving a population of roughly 1.3 million. MSD operates seven wastewater treatment facilities, capable of treating an average of 370 million gallons of sewage daily. The agency also maintains an extensive network of 9,790 miles of sewers, encompassing a wide range of ages from recently constructed to over 150 years old.
