Kings River Conservation District

Kings River Conservation District is a special district based in Fresno, California, with a staff of 48 employees. Established in 1951, the organization serves constituents across a 1.2 million-acre area encompassing portions of Fresno, Kings, and Tulare counties. Governed by a seven-member elected board of directors, the District focuses on managing the lower Kings River watershed. The Kings River Conservation District provides a range of services related to water, energy, and environmental resources. These include flood control, hydroelectric generation, groundwater management, water quality improvement, and fisheries enhancement. The District is responsible for maintaining over 170 miles of flood control levees on the Kings River and operates the Pine Flat Power Plant, which provides low-cost power to the State Water Project. The District actively supports the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act for the Kings and Tulare Lake Subbasins, providing staff assistance to six Groundwater Sustainability Agencies within its service area. They also play a key role in the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program, the Kings Basin Water Authority, and the Kings River Fishery Management Program.
