Kansas Beef Council

The Kansas Beef Council is a non-profit organization based in Topeka, Kansas. Founded in 1973 by the Kansas Livestock Association, the council is dedicated to promoting beef consumption. Governed by a volunteer board of cattle producers from across Kansas, the organization plays a vital role in supporting the beef industry at both the state and national levels. The Kansas Beef Council utilizes funds from the national beef checkoff program, which collects $1 per head of cattle sold. Approximately 85 cents of each dollar collected in Kansas is forwarded to the national level to support nationwide beef promotion efforts. The remaining funds are directed towards various programs within Kansas aimed at increasing demand for beef and beef products. These programs encompass advertising, retail and food service promotions, research, public relations, education, food safety initiatives, producer communications, nutrition outreach, and more. The beef checkoff program operates on the principles of fairness, accountability, state-based control, and producer-led direction. All producers and importers contribute equally to the checkoff, with half of the funds collected at the state level remaining under the control of Kansas producers. The Beef Board, an independent organization of 110 checkoff-paying volunteers, oversees and evaluates all checkoff-funded programs, ensuring transparency and effectiveness.
