Hearthstone Historic House Museum

Hearthstone Historic House Museum is a small privately held museum located in Appleton, Wisconsin. The museum employs three people and generates an annual revenue of $2.5 million. Hearthstone is nationally significant as the first house in the United States to be illuminated by a hydroelectric powered central Edison Electric System. This feat was accomplished by Henry J. Rogers, an entrepreneur who not only built the house but also brought electrification technology to Wisconsin and shaped the city of Appleton and the state's history by helping to found the paper industry along the Fox River. The museum focuses on interpreting the unique intersection of technology, history, and art represented by the house and its collections. Hearthstone is a prime example of Queen Anne style residential architecture, showcasing elaborate exterior design, rich interiors, and period-appropriate furnishings. It is recognized as a nationally and state-listed historic site. In addition to preserving and interpreting its historical significance, Hearthstone actively engages in educational initiatives.
