FOLAR Friends of the Lower Appomattox River

FOLAR Friends of the Lower Appomattox River is a non-profit organization based in Petersburg, Virginia. With a small team of four employees, FOLAR is dedicated to the conservation and protection of the Appomattox River. They achieve this through a multifaceted approach that encompasses environmental awareness, outdoor recreation, and community engagement. FOLAR's primary focus is the development and maintenance of the Appomattox River Trail (A.R.T.). This extensive trail system spans over 25 miles and boasts eight boat access points, three marinas, eleven historical sites, twelve miles of riverside trails, and sixteen riverside parks. FOLAR actively creates, improves, and maintains these assets through the tireless efforts of its volunteer network and generous donors. Beyond trail development, FOLAR is committed to safeguarding water quality through monitoring and regular river cleanup campaigns. Recognizing the river's potential for tourism and economic growth, FOLAR hosts and promotes events such as the annual 5K TRAIL RUN and PADDLE-or-BATTLE. The organization also plays a vital role in regional education and stewardship by offering educational videos, teacher guides, outdoor youth programs, and the FOLAR Environmental Stewardship Scholarship in partnership with the John Randolph Foundation.
