European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan EUPOL

European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan EUPOL was a civilian mission based in the United States. Established in 2007, EUPOL employed 92 personnel and generated an annual revenue of $100 million. The mission's mandate focused on supporting the Afghan government in reforming its civilian police service. EUPOL Afghanistan provided support through police experts from European Union member states, primarily by offering strategic advice to the Afghan Ministry of Interior. Their work aimed to build a civilian police force that operated within a framework of rule of law and respected human rights. EUPOL collaborated closely with the Afghan government and various local and international partners. The mission was structured into two main components: the Ministry of Interior Reform Component and the Professionalisation and Training Component (ANP). EUPOL's mandate was extended until December 31, 2016, by the Council of the European Union. The mission was headed by Pia Stjernvall (Finland) and Deputy Head of Mission Tarmo Miilits (Estonia).
