Downers Grove Sanitary Dist

The Downers Grove Sanitary District is a separate unit of local government serving the Village of Downers Grove, Illinois, along with portions of Westmont, Woodridge, Lisle, Oak Brook, and Darien. This organization operates independently of the municipalities it serves and employs 8 people. The Downers Grove Sanitary District is responsible for providing sanitary sewer service to its 20,000 customers, which include residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional users. The district manages over 250 miles of sanitary sewers and nine wastewater pumping stations, collecting and treating an average of 11 million gallons of sanitary wastewater daily. Wastewater treatment takes place at the district's Wastewater Treatment Center located at 5003 Walnut Avenue in Downers Grove. Treated wastewater, known as effluent, is discharged into either the East Branch of the DuPage River or St. Joseph’s Creek, adhering to regulations set by the State of Illinois and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
