Democracy Matters

Democracy Matters is a non-partisan, campus-based national student organization located in Poughkeepsie, New York. Founded in 2001, the organization employs 21 individuals and generates $50 million in annual revenue. Democracy Matters focuses on empowering students to advocate for political reform, particularly regarding campaign finance. They offer paid internships to undergraduates and affiliate internships to high school students, providing mentorship and training in grassroots organizing and advocacy. Students participate in projects connecting pro-democracy reforms to various social issues, including the environment, civil rights, education, healthcare, and foreign policy. A key aspect of Democracy Matters' work is promoting public financing of election campaigns, believing it strengthens democracy by reducing the influence of large private donations. Their national network of student chapters across the country works to mobilize youth activism and advocate for campaign finance reform, aiming to create a more inclusive and accountable democracy.
