Bureau of Economic Geology

The Bureau of Economic Geology is a research unit located in Austin, Texas. Established in 1909, it is the oldest organized research unit of The University of Texas and serves as the State Geological Survey of Texas. Under the direction of Scott W. Tinker, the Bureau employs 129 researchers and generates over $100 million in annual revenue. The Bureau focuses on a wide range of research projects concerning energy resources and economics, coastal and environmental studies, land resources and use, geologic and mineral mapping, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and subsurface nanotechnology. This research is conducted both domestically and internationally. In addition to research, the Bureau provides consulting, educational, technical, and informational services related to geological resources globally.
