Altadena Library District

The Altadena Library District is an independent special district based in Altadena, California. Established in 1926, the District serves a population of approximately 55,230 people across an area of about 8 square miles. Governed by a locally elected Board of Library Trustees, the District is responsible for providing library services to its community. The Altadena Library District operates two branches: the Main Library and the Bob Lucas Memorial Branch Library. The Main Library, located at 600 E. Mariposa St., features a 25,000 square foot building designed by architect Boyd Georgi and is surrounded by a park-like setting. The Bob Lucas Memorial Branch Library houses the District's Literacy Services. The District's commitment to local control and community responsiveness dates back to its inception. Initially, the District contracted with the County of Los Angeles for library services until becoming independent in 1955, at which point it assumed responsibility for its own building, collection, and staff.
