Abilene Zoological Gardens

Abilene Zoological Gardens, also known as the Abilene Zoo, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a place of learning and adventure for families in Abilene, Texas. Established in 1919, the zoo relocated and formally became a zoological institution in 1966. Today, it spans sixteen acres within scenic Nelson Park and houses over 1000 animals representing more than 250 species from around the globe. The zoo actively participates in expansion plans outlined in its Master Plan. Abilene Zoological Gardens aims to inspire visitors to learn about and preserve wildlife. The zoo's diverse animal collection includes participants in over 30 Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The Abilene Zoo proudly holds AZA accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to high standards of animal welfare and care. Through its "Quarters for Conservation" program, the zoo supports nearly two dozen local and international conservation efforts. A unique aspect of the Abilene Zoo is its focus on native Texas species. The zoo actively participates in the conservation of several native Texas species through its SSP programs, such as the Attwater's Prairie Chicken, Ocelot, Greater Roadrunner, Swift Fox, Ring-tailed Cat, Burrowing Owl, Black-Footed Ferret, and Whooping Crane.
