The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as "The Old Guard," is a United States-based military unit. As the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, the regiment boasts a rich history dating back to 1784. The Old Guard comprises 61 employees. The Old Guard serves as the Army's official ceremonial unit and escort to the President of the United States. They are responsible for conducting military ceremonies at various locations, including the White House, the Pentagon, and national memorials. Additionally, they maintain a 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown, provide funeral escorts, and participate in parades. A defining characteristic of the 3d Infantry Regiment is the distinctive buff strap worn on the left shoulder by each soldier. This strap, a replica of 19th-century knapsack straps, symbolizes the unit's pride in appearance and precision. The regiment is also unique in its practice of parading with fixed bayonets, a tradition dating back to their Mexican War triumph at Cerro Gordo.
